Project-Based Learning Metode proyek berasal dari gagasan John Dewey tentang konsep “Learning by doing” yaitu proses perolehan hasil belajar dengan mengerjakan tindakan-tindakan tertentu sesuai dengan tujuan (Grant, 2002). Kelas demokratis mengandung arti bahwa siswa dibagi dalam kelompok-kelompok kecil untuk menyelesaikan proyek yang menarik dan pilihan siswa sendiri.   Piaget, Vygotsky, dan Konstruktivisme Piaget mengemukakan bahwa pengetahuan siswa akan berkembang saat siswa menghadapi pengalaman baru yang memaksa untuk membangun dan memodifikasi pengetahuan awal. Vygotsky menyatakan bahwa perkembangan intelektual individu berhadapan dengan pengalaman baru dan menantang lalu berusaha untuk memecahkan masalah yang dimunculkan oleh pengalaman tersebut. Kedua pernyataan ahli tersebut didukung dengan teori konstruktivisme yang menekankan pengetahuan dibangun sendiri oleh siswa dengan menggunakan pengalaman dan struktur kognitif yang sudah dimiliki (Wrigley, 2003).
